There is much inner work needed before one begins the journey of unschooling a child.
- Stepping away from the usual crowd helps in this process. It calls for deep reflection and inquiry into what education truly means. We began in Chennai and slowly moved towards the Auroville zone, where we felt a sense of betterment and belonging.
- Deep thinkers and sensitives may find this path more natural, yet it also requires being in harmony with one’s life partner. I myself searched for a mentor who could bridge the gap between us—someone who could hold the wholeness of educating a child while also understanding the commercial aspects in a conscious way. I found no such guide. Still, through our differing strengths, we could contribute to our child’s journey, though conflicts did arise. Out of this, I now see myself as a mentor and facilitator for parents stepping into unschooling—supporting you to understand the many perspectives of living in reality through this path.
- Unschooling must be sculpted and customized to each family. In our 7 years of unschooling, we gathered many insights. Parents’ interests and strengths, the child’s future survival, childhood sustenance, and real-life approaches—all these need to be considered before starting the journey.
- Sustainability, the wisdom of J. Krishnamurti, the Auroville lifestyle, and alternative schooling perspectives—through our experiences with Aarohi, Puvidam, Sholai School, as well as observations from eco-villages and intentional communities—have given us a wealth of understanding. This can help you gain valuable insights for a successful unschooling experience. For single parents, the decision may feel especially tough, but guidance and support are here for you.
